Best apps to decide where to eat with friends

Swipe apps like Where2Eat, ForkYes and Tastebuddy bring the restaurant options for a group with no ideas yet. Palytt suits a group that already has two or three places in mind: add them to a Room, vote, and lock the pick, with guests voting from a browser.

We make Palytt, so it is on this list and we say where it is not the right fit. The apps are ordered by how little friends need to install or sign up, according to each listing, not by rating. Facts come from each app’s own US App Store listing, linked below, checked October 10, 2026.

How to choose a group dining app

No ideas yet? A swipe app brings nearby restaurants for everyone to react to: Where2Eat, DinnerWhere, ForkYes, Tastebuddy or Food Swipe.

A shortlist already? A vote can be quicker than a swipe deck. A Palytt Room holds your options, and a free restaurant picker can draw from a shortlist if nobody cares.

Friends on different phones? Check how guests join. Where2Eat, Food Swipe and a Palytt Room let guests take part without installing the app.

Happy hour or a deal? Tonight’s Bite shows what is running nearby.

Once you have picked a place, use the best apps to know what to order to choose a dish.

Where Palytt is not the right fit

A Palytt Room starts from the shortlist your group brings. It does not show nearby restaurants to swipe through, so a group with no ideas is better served by a swipe app.

Palytt’s app is for iPhone and iPad, with Android coming. Guests can vote in a browser, but if the person organizing is on Android today, check the other apps’ own listings or start the vote in your group chat with the group restaurant worksheet. See where to get Palytt for Android status.

Palytt does not make reservations or promise live menus and prices.

Good to know

What is the best app to decide where to eat with friends?

It depends on your group. A swipe app such as Where2Eat, ForkYes or Tastebuddy suits a group with no ideas yet. Palytt Rooms suit a group that already has a shortlist and wants a vote that guests can join from a browser. We make Palytt, so weigh that.

Do my friends need to download the app?

It varies. Where2Eat’s listing says guests can join from a browser, Food Swipe’s listing says no account is required to join a session, and Palytt guests can vote from a valid invitation link in a browser. Check each listing for the current rules.

Is there a free way to decide without an app?

Yes. A group-chat poll works, and the free Palytt restaurant picker lets you enter a shortlist, rule out places that miss hard requirements and draw from the rest. The picker is a random draw, not a group vote.

Why is Palytt on a list it may not win?

We make Palytt, and it has a way for a group to vote on where to eat. Every description of another app follows its own US App Store listing, checked October 10, 2026, and the list says where Palytt is not the right fit. We have not tested every app.
