Restaurant apps compared for 2026: tracking, reviews, and knowing what to order

The best restaurant app depends on the job. Google Maps and Yelp are best for finding a restaurant, Beli is the most popular app for tracking and ranking the places you've been, and Palytt is built for deciding what to order once you're there. Truffle, Mapstr, Savor, Morel, Skip Menu, MenuFit and Menu Order AI each cover a narrower version of one of those jobs.

We make Palytt, so read this with that in mind. Descriptions of other apps come from their own App Store listings and websites as of September 2026, and each app is described by what it does best.

What are the main kinds of restaurant apps?

Most food apps do one of three jobs:

  1. Find a restaurant. Search, maps, reviews, hours and directions.
  2. Track where you've eaten. Lists, rankings, journals and maps of your own history, often shared with friends.
  3. Decide what to order. Dish-level picks once you've chosen the place.

Some apps also help a group agree on where to eat. Most people end up using a different app for each job, and that's fine.

Which apps are best for finding a restaurant?

Google Maps is the default for finding places and getting there: directions, hours, photos, menu links and Google reviews for almost every restaurant. Restaurant pages also show popular dishes and photos drawn from reviews, and you can save places to lists and share them.

Yelp is built around restaurant ratings and reviews, with detailed business information and large photo galleries. It shows Popular Dishes on restaurant pages and offers Menu Vision, which shows dish photos and popularity when you point your camera at a menu.

Both have far broader coverage than any of the smaller apps below. If you need to know whether a place is open, whether it has parking, or what else is nearby, start with one of these.

Which apps are best for tracking restaurants you've tried?

Beli is the most popular app in this category. It keeps ranked lists and maps of the restaurants you've been to and want to try, shows a feed of where your friends are eating, and gives you a Match Score for how closely your taste lines up with each friend's. It's on iPhone and Android and, as of September 2026, has more than 17,000 US App Store ratings averaging 4.8. Its rankings come from comparing restaurants against each other, which many people enjoy and some find tiring.

Truffle is a social restaurant tracker you can also use privately. It skips ranking on purpose, doesn't push you to post photos or reviews, and puts your restaurants and your friends' restaurants on one map.

Mapstr organizes saved places of every kind on a map. You can tag and color-code places, import Google Maps lists, and follow recommendations from friends and creators. Shared maps open in a browser without the app.

Savor tracks individual dishes rather than restaurants, with a 10-point rating, custom lists and search across your food history. It's private by default.

Morel is built around shared dining lists with friends, check-ins tagged with who you ate with, friends' dish ratings and a personal taste map. It can also save restaurant reels from Instagram.

Which apps help you decide what to order?

This is the newest category, and the apps differ mainly in what they base their picks on.

Palytt ranks the dishes at a restaurant for your taste with a 0–100 match score and shows your friends' verdicts on each dish. Each restaurant's order guide sorts dishes into get this, add on, popular here and maybe skip. A match score only appears when it's built from your own taste; otherwise the guide says it's showing popularity.

Yelp and Google Maps show what the crowd orders, through popular dishes on restaurant pages and, on Yelp, Menu Vision.

Skip Menu reads a restaurant's customer reviews and ranks its best dishes, with a reason for each pick.

MenuFit suggests what to order and what to avoid for nutrition goals, such as cutting or bulking, even when the menu lists no calories. Full access needs a subscription.

Menu Order AI lets you scan a menu, printed or on a delivery app, and get picks for GLP-1 or high-protein eating.

Which apps help a group decide where to eat?

For most groups, a group chat and a quick poll still do most of the work. Among restaurant apps, Palytt's Rooms are built for it: Palytt ranks places for everyone at the table, each person votes, and the host locks the favorite once everyone has voted. Beli and Mapstr let friends share lists and recommendations that a group can choose from. For the process itself, see our guide to deciding where to eat with friends.

Which app should you use?

  • To find a restaurant and get there: Google Maps or Yelp.
  • To keep a ranked history of restaurants: Beli. For a lighter journal without ranking, Truffle.
  • To save places of every kind on a map: Mapstr.
  • To track individual dishes privately: Savor.
  • To keep shared lists with the same group of friends: Morel.
  • To know what to order for your taste: Palytt. For a summary of what reviewers liked, Skip Menu. For nutrition goals, MenuFit or Menu Order AI.
  • To get a group to agree on a place: Palytt Rooms, or a poll in your group chat.

What should you look for in a restaurant app?

  • Where the picks come from. Your own history, your friends, strangers' reviews, or an AI summary. Each is useful for different things, and a good app tells you which one you're looking at.
  • Coverage where you eat. The big platforms cover almost everywhere. Smaller apps can be thin in some cities, so look up a few restaurants you already know.
  • How much work it asks of you. Ranking every meal, logging every dish, or answering a few questions up front.
  • Privacy. Whether your lists and ratings are public, friends-only or private by default.
  • Platforms and price. Several of these apps are iPhone-only, and some keep features behind a subscription.

Where does Palytt fit?

Palytt is for the moment you're looking at a menu. It doesn't try to replace Google Maps for directions, Yelp for reviews, or Beli for a ranked history of everywhere you've eaten, and it covers fewer restaurants than the big platforms. What it adds is an order guide ranked for your taste, with your friends' verdicts on each dish, and Rooms for getting a group to agree. Palytt is free on iPhone and iPad and isn't on Android yet.
